PSYCHOEDUCATION: UNDERSTANDING EXPOSURE AND RESPONSE PREVENTION
At Nūrish Psychotherapy, we believe healing begins with understanding. Our blog is a space where curiosity is welcomed, experiences are validated, and evidence-based approaches are shared in ways that feel compassionate, relatable, and empowering.
At Nūrish, we understand that healing doesn’t happen in a one-size-fits-all way. Our team of therapists are trained, willing, and able to implement ERP through a culturally responsive and relevant lens. We work collaboratively with each client to create a tailored approach that honours your identity, lived experiences, values, and goals while ensuring that therapy feels safe, respectful, and meaningful.
WHAT IS EXPOSURE AND RESPONSE PREVENTION (ERP)?
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a specialized form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) that helps people gradually face fears while learning new ways to respond without relying on avoidance or rituals ( International OCD Foundation [IOCDF], n.d.). Rather than trying to eliminate anxiety completely, ERP supports you in building tolerance for discomfort and breaking the cycle that keeps fear going (Law & Boisseau, 2019).
At its core, ERP involves gently and collaboratively approaching thoughts, situations, or sensations that trigger anxiety while practicing not engaging in the usual compulsive or safety behaviours. Over time, the brain learns that anxiety naturally rises and falls and that you can handle it (Cleveland Clinic, 2025).
HOW ERP WORKS: ERP is typically a gradual, structured process that includes…
Learning about your anxiety or OCD patterns
Identifying triggers and creating a personalized exposure plan
Practicing exposures step-by-step with a trained therapist's support
Reflecting and building coping skills
This process helps “retrain” (neuroplasticity) the brain and reduce the intensity of fear responses over time (Cleveland Clinic, 2025).
SIGNES ERP MAY BE HELPFUL: You might consider ERP if you notice…
Persistent intrusive thoughts that feel hard to let go of
Repetitive behaviours or mental rituals used to reduce anxiety
Avoidance of certain places, situations, or experiences
Feeling stuck in cycles of reassurance-seeking or checking
Anxiety that interferes with daily functioning
ERP is considered a first-line psychological treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder and has strong evidence supporting its effectiveness (IOCDF, n.d.; Law & Boisseau, 2019).
WHO MAY BENEFIT FROM ERP: Research shows it can support people experiencing the following.
Anxiety disorders
Phobias
Panic symptoms
Body-focused repetitive behaviours
Health anxiety
ERP has been shown to reduce symptoms across age groups, from children to older adults, when tailored to individual needs (IOCDF, n.d.).
BENEFITS OF ERP: Many people who engage in ERP experience meaningful and lasting changes, including…
Reduced anxiety and obsessive thoughts
Stronger coping skills
Improved confidence and sense of control
Better overall well-being and functioning
GENTLE REMINDERS:
If you’re considering ERP, it’s okay to feel unsure or even a little nervous. Facing fears can feel vulnerable, and you don’t have to do it alone. With the right support, compassion, and pacing, meaningful change is possible.
If you’re curious about whether ERP might be a good fit for you, our team at Nūrish Psychotherapy is here to walk alongside you.
